Sodium bicarbonate is a salt composed of sodium ions and bicarbonate ions. Baking soda is a white solid that is crystalline but often appears as a fine powder. It has a slightly salty, alkaline taste. The natural mineral form of sodium bicarbonate is nahcolite. It can also be produced artificially as well.
As a food additive codified by the European Union, identified as E500, baking soda is widely used as a food additive and has been known as sodium bicarbonate, bread soda, cooking soda and bicarbonate of soda. Besides being a food additive, baking soda can also be used in many other industries such as medicine.
