The Pereskia aculeata plant, which belongs to the cactaceae family, is popularly known as ora pro nobis, “pray for us” in Latin.
The name is attributed to the fact that the plant would be harvested in a priest’s yard, whenever he said a litany. It played a fundamental role in feeding slaves and is therefore also known as the “meat of the poor”, due to its high protein content. The leaves of ora pro nobis are rich in oxidants, vitamins and proteins. It has 25% protein value, which is higher than some vegetables, such as spinach, which has 2.2%. According to studies carried out at the Federal University of Lavras (MG), the bromatological composition of the plant was evaluated and it was found that the leaves contain around 20% protein, vitamins A, B and C and minerals such as calcium, phosphorus and iron.
