Onion powder is made from dehydrated onions, giving it a concentrated flavor that pairs well with many foods. Onion powder offers health benefits because it contains some nutrients, but in small amounts, meaning you can’t rely on it to meet your recommended daily totals.

Onion powder has an intense flavor but is very low in salt, at just 2 mg per teaspoon. This makes it a good substitute for salt in many recipes, including burgers, salads and soups. The recommended daily intake of sodium is no more than 2,300 mg, a number many people exceed. Cutting salt with onion powder when cooking can help reduce the risk of developing high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke.
