Guarana is a shrub-like, spreading vine native to the Amazon region. Guarana produces red berries that have been used like coffee here in Brazil. When ripe, the berries open at the end and the seeds look like a human eyeball. The seeds of the berry are dried, roasted and then ground into guarana powder.
Older texts refer to a substance called guaranine, which is chemically identical to caffeine. More recently, many chemists argue that the substance is caffeine, making guarana the largest source of caffeine available in nature. Guarana seeds contain 2.5 times the amount of caffeine as coffee.
Mills Vieira has several customers who use its mills for grinding guarana.
