Peat is an organo-mineral fossil substance, soft when wet, tenacious when dry, with a color varying between grey and black (due to the presence of ulmine), found in swamps.

In addition to the well-established use of peat as an energy source, in recent years there has been an increase in its use in agriculture, as an input for the production of soil conditioners, biofertilizers, seedling substrates or “in natura” application to the soil.
